I was scrolling down my Facebook page and chatting with my friend Tanya yesterday morning when a PM from my TV News Photographer friend John showed up on my screen. John and I worked together at WETM TV 19 years ago. I left after 9 months as an audio/chyron operator. John still works there.
Earlier in the morning, I had posted a Pregnancy and Infant Loss picture created by my friend Amy. It pictured a candle and said in loving memory of Gabrielle Renee. John must have seen that and asked me if I'd be willing to meet with reporter Andrew Banas about our experience with losing Gabrielle. My husband gave me the go ahead to do it.
I met Andrew at the hospital where Gabrielle was born nearly 16 years ago. He was also interviewing the Unit Nurse for the NICU. Her name was Kimberlee (neat that we share a name and both spell it uncommonly. My name is spelled Kimberley).
Andrew talked to Kimberlee first. It touched my heart to see her get so emotional about the subject of infant loss. Her care for not only the babies' families, but her staff also was very evident. That was very comforting to me to know that families going through a similar experience are getting loving support just as we did. That became even more apparent as we had the chance to talk as Andrew was getting some cut away shots.
When it came to my turn to be interviewed, Andrew asked me about our experience. I explained it all started on August 3, 1999 during a routine ultrasound. I explained in a nutshell what anencephaly was. I also said that there is hope and things get better through time. He beautifully put into words what I was feeling. I don't know if I said outright that I wanted to use this interview to help others, but I'm glad he included that. That was exactly my motivation of sharing our story.
Even when we were going through the situation 16 years ago, it was my hope that through our hurt that we would have the opportunity to reach out to others. God has given me opportunities to do that through the years.
Andrew thanked me over and over again for being willing to share my story. Each time I thanked him for giving me the opportunity. He had some very kind words about me in his Facebook post to link the story to the TV stations website. I took the opportunity to thank him again then.
My husband Tim and I were talking last night about the opportunity. He shared the hope that this news story will help others. When we were going through it we had a lot of family and friends to help support us, but we didn't have internet until after Gabrielle died. I told him I'm glad the internet is so readily available to take advantage of many online support groups today that we didn't have 16 years ago. Amy is one of my online friends I met through the anencephaly.info Facebook page. Our daughters were born within weeks of each other (her daughter was born on my birthday January 11, 2000).
If you are one of the hurting parents, I'm praying for you!!!
