Finding Treasures

I came across a folder with some old writing in it.  As I mentioned in my last post, I have always loved to write. One particular writing treasure I found was an article that I wrote for one of my "Student Press Corps" articles for the Binghamton Press and Sun Bulletin. I wrote for the newspaper from early 1985 until I graduated from high school in 1988.   My principal, Donald Benza, and vice principal, Paula Nickerson,  were very supportive of my journalism endeavor. Mr. Benza was gracious enough to let me interview him many times about different things going on at school.  I won 2 awards in the 3 years that I wrote for the paper. In my search today, I came across one of my favorite articles that I wrote. Nationally known PBS kids show host "Commander" Mark Kistler was visiting my school as part of an arts festival.    I remember Mark being a kind and helpful interviewee.   It was ex...

Writer's Block

When I purchased this computer 10 months ago, I did so with the idea in mind that I would like to pursue my writing career.  Do you think I can think of a project to work on now that I can? I've always loved to write.  I always had a notebook with me.  Writing on the bus on the way to and from work was my favorite time to jot my thoughts down.  I had notebooks full of short stories and journal writings.   Many of them I got rid of.  Sometimes I regret that decision.  I still write in a journal, but I'm not as regular in writing in it as I used to be. I really enjoy writing this blog!  I know I'm not totally regular at it, but days like today it prompts me to put my thoughts down. Please pray for wisdom and inspiration.  Today I'm feeling like I need to put this God given desire to use. I'm debating whether to go the short story route.  I've found non fiction to be fun, but I've never found myself goo...

Great Friends

4 years ago I joined my local MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group. I spent 4 years as a "MOPS mom" and this year I am a "MOPPETS" worker. I have been watching the babies. It's been so much fun. Although last time I was alone and I had 6 babies screaming at the same time. That was stressful. Through this group, I have met many wonderful friends. I haven't really had the opportunity to visit with them too much the past few months, so I was glad to get an invitation from the MOPS coordinator, Carrie to go Christmas caroling in our friend Laura's neighborhood and a party at Carrie's house. I took my 2 younger children with me. I wasn't sure how they would like caroling. Other than a few incidents of Nate hiding his face in my coat and Anna's feet getting cold. It went well. It was nice hearing some really great harmony as our small group sang. Nate requested to sing Jingle Bells at least 3 times. We only sang it twice though, At the...

In the Face of Tragedy

I shared these thoughts with my MOPS friends in the newsletter"The Announcer". It sums up my feelings of the tragic shooting in Binghamton NY, near my hometown and all the other violence and unrest in the world today. The shooting really shook me up. My mom drove past the Civic Center less than 24 hours before the shooting. I walked around the area countless times throughout my life. The teacher killed was the wife of one of my former doctors (a ear/nose throat specialist). My thoughts and prayers are with the victims families, the surviors, the emergency personnel who responded and the whole community. What a shock! Adventures in Mothering Because He Lives "How sweet to hold a newborn baby and feel the pride and joy he gives, but greater still this calm assurance this child can face uncertain days….Because He Lives" Bill and Gloria Gaither Copyright 1971. As I sang that song on Sunday in church, those words brought tears to my eyes. I chose the song in ...

It's Been a Long Time!

I came across one of my friend's blogs today. I totally forgot I had one. I haven't posted since September. I have some updates since then. My mom just went to her endocrinologist and thryoid surgeon this past week. She is still cancer free. She's even on lower doses of thyroid hormones. However, she was just diagnosed with a sinus condition. Part of it is a deviated septum plus she has a blockage in the front top part of her sinuses that will require surgery next month. Again, it was found in a test not specifically for her problem (swollen lymph nodes), but it showed up. Another happier update, I now have over 350 on Facebook. I have found some more relatives, some college friends, some former neighbors and my mom even joined! It's been so neat catching up with people I haven't seen in years. Some of them are shocked I even remember them. I'll be more faithful in updating this blog

The Wheels on the Bus.....

Today was a blast from the past for me. Growing up my main mode of transportation if we wanted to go anywhere when my dad was working was the county transit bus. My mom did not drive until I was 19. I didn't get a car until after college. Even sometimes after I had a car it was just easier taking a bus to the nearby city. I had not been on a county bus in about 11 years when my car broke down after I got married and my husband wasn't home from work yet to take me to the store I worked at. Tim didn't have any "e time" left to bring me the car because being the great dad he is took what was left yesterday for Elijah's birthday. Even if he did, I would have had to take him back to work then go back and get him later. I thought I needed to go downtown anyway to go to the library, so I might as well catch the bus as it goes to where my husband worked. It was SO nice! One of my friends was on her way to the library, so I was able to ride over with her. I spend ne...
